Tragic House Fire in Crete Claims Lives of Four Residents

A devastating house fire in Crete early Wednesday morning has claimed the lives of four people, including a 71-year-old man and three children.

Crete fire crews responded just before 1 a.m. to a reported blaze in the 100-block of Chalet Court. Upon arrival, firefighters found a one-story home fully engulfed. Due to the dangerous conditions, including a partial roof collapse, crews initially had to fight the fire defensively. The fire was brought under control in about 40 minutes.

Once it was safe to enter, responders discovered the bodies of four victims. The deceased have been identified as Walter Palmer, 71, and his three grandchildren: Kassidy, Mary, and Ivy, all residents of Crete. Two of the children were found in a front bedroom, while Walter Palmer and a teenager were found in a back bedroom.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office, with the Will County Coroner’s Office and Crete police also involved.

Crete-Monee School District 201-U confirmed that the children were students in the district, with two attending Monee Elementary School and one attending Crete-Monee High School. Superintendent Dr. Kara Coglianese said the district is providing additional support for students, staff, and families during this difficult time.

Neighbors described the family as friendly and close-knit. Surveillance footage from nearby homes shows the fire’s massive flames around 12:44 a.m., highlighting the speed and severity of the blaze.

The community continues to mourn the tragic loss of these four lives, with officials urging anyone with information about the fire to come forward.
