Who Was Ian Cabrera Núñez? 13-Year-Old Victim Identified in Santa Fe School Shooting

A tragic school shooting in San Cristóbal has claimed the life of 13-year-old Ian Cabrera Núñez, leaving a community in mourning and several others injured.

The incident occurred at Escuela Normal N°40 “Mariano Moreno” during a morning flag-raising ceremony, as students gathered at the start of the school day. Authorities say a 15-year-old student brought a shotgun belonging to his grandfather and opened fire on classmates.

Ian Cabrera Núñez, who had recently begun his secondary education, was the only fatal victim. Despite emergency response efforts, he died at the scene from his injuries.

At least eight other students were injured during the incident. Officials reported that six sustained minor injuries while attempting to flee, while two others—ages 13 and 15—suffered gunshot wounds and were transported to nearby hospitals. Both are currently reported to be out of immediate danger.

The suspect was quickly subdued by school staff and taken into custody by authorities.

Pablo Cococcioni confirmed the number of casualties, while José Goity stated that the suspect had no prior record of violent behavior in school. However, preliminary findings suggest the teen may have been dealing with personal and family-related challenges.

Local reports have also raised concerns about possible bullying, though officials say this has not yet been confirmed and remains part of the ongoing investigation.

Classes at the school have been suspended as authorities continue their inquiry and provide counseling and support to affected students, staff, and families.

The death of Ian Cabrera Núñez has deeply shaken the community, highlighting ongoing concerns about school safety and the well-being of young people.
