Who Was Mackenzie Gunther? Second Pilot Identified in Deadly Runway Collision
New details have emerged following the fatal crash at LaGuardia Airport, where Air Canada Express Flight 646 collided with a fire truck, killing both pilots on board.
Young Pilot Beginning His Career
Mackenzie Gunther has been identified as the first officer who lost his life in the collision. He was a recent graduate of Seneca College, where he completed an Honours Bachelor of Aviation Technology in 2023.
After graduating, Gunther entered the aviation industry through the Jazz Aviation Pathways Program, quickly transitioning into a professional role as a first officer flying regional routes.
Role in Air Canada Express Operations
Gunther was serving aboard a Bombardier CRJ-900 operating under the Air Canada Express banner at the time of the crash.
The flight, traveling from Montreal to New York, was under the command of captain Antoine Forest, who also died in the incident.
Fatal Runway Collision
Authorities say the aircraft struck a Port Authority fire truck that had entered the runway shortly before midnight. Preliminary reports indicate the jet was traveling at high speed—around 150 mph—when the collision occurred, causing catastrophic damage and killing both pilots instantly.
Weather conditions, including heavy rainfall, are also being reviewed as part of the ongoing investigation.
