Police in Huntsville, Alabama, are investigating the death of a 19-year-old woman who was found shot at an apartment complex Wednesday morning.
According to authorities, officers responded to a shots-fired call around 9:00 a.m. at an apartment complex located near the intersection of Julia Street and University Drive. When officers arrived, they discovered a young woman suffering from gunshot wounds. She was later pronounced dead at the scene.
The Madison County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as 19-year-old Nadiya Dayana Elise Perkins of Montgomery, Alabama. Madison County Coroner Dr. Tyler Berryhill confirmed that Perkins died from injuries caused by the shooting, and her death has been ruled a homicide.
Police say the investigation is still ongoing as detectives continue working to determine what led to the fatal shooting. At this time, authorities have not released information regarding a suspect or a possible motive.
In a statement released by Alabama A&M University President Dr. Daniel K. Wims, it was confirmed that Perkins was a freshman at the university majoring in criminal justice. The university expressed its deepest condolences to Perkins’ family, friends, classmates, and professors.
University officials described Perkins as a kind and thoughtful member of the campus community whose loss has deeply impacted students and staff. The university also encouraged anyone affected by the tragedy to seek counseling and support services available through the school.
Huntsville police are asking anyone with information related to the case to contact authorities as the investigation continues.
