Authorities are investigating a tragic overnight shooting that claimed the life of an 18-year-old college student in Chicago.
According to the Chicago Police Department, officers responded around 1:30 a.m. to reports of a person shot near the intersection of Sheridan Road and Pratt Boulevard, close to the lakefront in the Rogers Park neighborhood.
When officers and Loyola University Police Department arrived, they located the victim, identified as Sheridan Gorman, suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Loyola University Chicago confirmed that Gorman was a student at the university. Preliminary reports indicate she was walking along the lakefront with a group of friends when an unidentified male approached and opened fire before fleeing on foot. No other injuries were reported.
At this time, authorities have not released a suspect description, and no arrests have been made. The motive behind the shooting remains unclear as detectives continue to investigate.
University President Mark C. Reed expressed deep sorrow over the loss, extending condolences to Gorman’s family, friends, and the campus community.
The university has made counseling and support services available for students and staff. A vigil is also planned at the campus chapel to honor her life.
Police say the case remains an active and ongoing investigation, and anyone with information is urged to come forward.
