Shooting During Funeral in Indianapolis Leaves One Dead, Another Critically Injured

A funeral service turned tragic Saturday morning after a shooting broke out outside Antioch Baptist Church on the city’s north side, leaving one man dead and another in critical condition.

The incident occurred around 9:55 a.m. in the 700 block of East 32nd Street, where family and friends had gathered to honor the life of Deon Michael “Punchy” Hart. According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD), officers responded to reports of gunfire and arrived to find two adult males suffering from gunshot wounds outside the church.

Both victims were transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Authorities have since confirmed that one of the victims, identified as Martez Starks, succumbed to his injuries. The second victim remains hospitalized in critical condition.

Preliminary information from investigators suggests that a disturbance outside the church escalated into violence, though the exact circumstances leading up to the shooting remain unclear. At this time, no suspects have been taken into custody, and police have not released further details.

The shooting has left the community shaken, particularly given that it occurred during a funeral service—an event meant for mourning and reflection. Church leadership expressed deep concern and heartbreak over the incident, emphasizing that such violence is uncommon in the area.

Authorities continue to investigate and are urging anyone with information to come forward as they work to determine what led to the deadly shooting.

This remains a developing story.
