Authorities and aviation sources have released the correct photo of Mackenzie Gunther, the first officer who was killed in the recent runway collision at LaGuardia Airport.
Early Career in Aviation
Gunther was serving as first officer aboard an Air Canada Express flight operating a Bombardier CRJ-900 from Montreal to New York at the time of the crash.
He graduated in 2023 from Seneca Polytechnic with an Honours Bachelor of Aviation Technology and quickly entered the aviation industry through the Jazz Aviation Pathways Program.
Professional Background
Following his training, Gunther joined Jazz Aviation, where he began flying regional routes under the Air Canada Express banner. Prior to that, he had also received aviation training at Cégep de Chicoutimi and gained experience with regional operators including Air Saguenay and Exact Air.
Colleagues and instructors described him as being in the early stages of a promising aviation career.
Fatal Runway Collision
Gunther was flying alongside captain Antoine Forest when their aircraft collided with a fire truck on the runway.
Both pilots were killed in the impact. The crash remains under investigation as officials examine the circumstances that led to the deadly incident.
Ongoing Investigation
Investigators continue to review communication logs, runway procedures, and other operational factors as they work to determine the cause of the collision.
