Convicted Killer Jarvis Butts Dies Weeks After Sentencing in Disturbing Turn of Events

Jarvis Butts, a Detroit man recently sentenced to decades in prison, has died just weeks after his conviction, adding a troubling development to an already heartbreaking case.

Butts had pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in connection with the death of his 13-year-old niece, Na’Ziyah Harris. He also faced multiple sexual assault charges involving minors. The case drew widespread attention, particularly because Na’Ziyah’s body has never been found since she was reported missing in January 2024.

Following his sentencing of 35 to 60 years, Butts was being held at the Charles Egeler Reception and Guidance Center, a facility where inmates are evaluated before being transferred to long-term prisons.

Authorities say his death is currently under investigation and is believed to be a suicide, though an official cause has not yet been confirmed. The fact that he died before fully serving his sentence has raised questions about the circumstances surrounding his time in custody.

The case has already deeply affected the community, and this latest development has only added to the grief and uncertainty surrounding it. Officials say more information will be released as the investigation continues.
