A 22-year-old man, identified as Robert Lee Rothwell III, was killed following a shooting on Interstate 71 in Cincinnati on Thursday evening, according to the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies said the incident occurred while three people were traveling northbound on the highway in a vehicle that was struck by gunfire under unclear circumstances.
Law enforcement officials stated that the victim, who was inside the vehicle when the shots were fired, was critically injured and transported to UC Medical Center for emergency treatment. Despite medical efforts, he was later pronounced dead at the hospital. The Hamilton County Coroner confirmed his death.
Authorities said they are still working to determine how many individuals were inside the suspect vehicle, and no arrests have been made at this time. The motive behind the shooting remains unknown, and investigators have not released any details about potential suspects.
The shooting caused a major disruption on I-71, forcing officials to shut down the interstate for several hours while law enforcement processed the scene and collected evidence. The highway has since reopened to traffic.
Police have urged anyone with information about the incident to come forward as the investigation continues. The case remains active as detectives work to identify those responsible and determine the circumstances leading up to the deadly shooting.
