In Loving Memory of Nicholas “Nic” Crews

Authorities in Jasper are continuing to investigate a tragic shooting at the Pickens VA Clinic that resulted in the deaths of two individuals.

According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the incident occurred on March 17, 2026, at the VA outpatient clinic located on East Church Street. Investigators say Nicholas “Nic” Crews, 34, of Marietta, was working as a social work case manager when he was shot by Lawrence Charles Michels, 51, of Jasper.

Authorities report that Michels had arrived at the clinic seeking a walk-in mental health consultation prior to the shooting, which occurred around 1:30 p.m. inside the facility.

Crews sustained critical injuries and was airlifted to a trauma center, where he later died on March 18 despite extensive medical efforts.

Following the shooting, Michels exited the building while still armed and encountered responding officers along with an armed civilian. An exchange of gunfire took place, during which Michels was shot and killed at the scene. Officials confirmed that no law enforcement officers were injured.

The Jasper Police Department requested assistance from the GBI, and the case remains an active and ongoing investigation, with more details expected to be released as authorities continue their work.
