A 14-year-old boy has been taken into custody following the fatal shooting of 15-year-old Royce Witchet near Westfield High School in northwest Houston.

The shooting happened Tuesday in the 16700 block of Ella Boulevard, according to authorities. Investigators said the teenage suspect is believed to be a student in Spring Independent School District, although his identity has not been released because of his age.

Royce Witchet was fatally shot near the school, leaving his family, classmates, friends and members of the community mourning his death.

His mother, Rhonda Churchwell, remembered Royce as a loving son, brother and protector with a big heart. Speaking with KPRC 2, she expressed her grief over the loss of her teenage son and questioned whether taking his life was worth the devastating consequences.

The circumstances that led to the shooting remain under investigation. Authorities are continuing to work to determine what happened before the shooting and what led to the confrontation.

The investigation remains active, and officials have not released additional details about the relationship between Royce and the 14-year-old suspect.

As the community mourns, condolences and prayers continue to go out to Royce Witchet’s family, friends and everyone who knew him.
