A 39-year-old Portsmouth man who was killed in an officer-involved shooting at a Walmart in Staunton, Virginia, has been identified as Montique Treymayne Gaston.
According to authorities, the shooting happened Tuesday night at approximately 7:15 pm at the Walmart located at 1028-C Richmond Avenue.
Police said Gaston was pronounced dead at the scene following the shooting. Details about what led to the encounter and the circumstances immediately preceding the gunfire have not yet been released.
The Staunton police officer involved in the shooting was not injured. In accordance with department policy, the officer has been placed on administrative leave while the incident is investigated.
The Virginia State Police is conducting the investigation into the officer-involved shooting. Authorities said that once the investigation is completed, the case will be reviewed by a special prosecutor.
At this time, officials have not released additional information about what prompted the shooting or what happened between Gaston and the officer before the fatal encounter.
