  • Secret Service Engages Armed Individual Near White House; One Injured, Area Secured

    Authorities responded to an incident near the White House on Monday afternoon involving an armed individual.

    According to the United States Secret Service, officers identified a person suspected of carrying a firearm near 15th Street SW and Independence Avenue SW, close to the Washington Monument.

    Officials said the individual attempted to flee when approached and discharged a weapon. Secret Service personnel returned fire, and the individual was struck and transported to a hospital.

    The incident occurred shortly after a motorcade carrying J. D. Vance passed through the area. Authorities have not confirmed any connection between the motorcade and the incident.

    A bystander was also struck during the exchange but did not sustain life-threatening injuries, according to officials.

    The area was temporarily secured, and access around the White House complex was restricted while authorities responded.

    The investigation is ongoing, and additional details have not yet been released.
