Two people have died following a major crash involving two 18-wheelers Friday afternoon on Interstate 20 East near Pines Road in Shreveport, Louisiana.

According to Shreveport police, the crash happened when one 18-wheeler crossed the center median and struck another semi-truck. The impact caused one of the trucks to overturn, resulting in a devastating collision.

Police confirmed that both victims died as a result of the crash. An AirLife medical helicopter also responded to the scene as emergency crews worked to assist those involved and assess the situation.

The serious crash forced authorities to shut down I-20 East near Pines Road. Police warned motorists to avoid the area as crews remained at the scene investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision.

Sgt. Patterson advised drivers that the eastbound interstate was expected to remain closed for approximately four to five hours following the crash. Motorists were urged to find alternate routes and prepare for significant delays in the area.

The identities of the two people who died had not been released in the initial report.
